Smart water meters

Smart meters help keep your water flowing

Smart meters help us understand how water is used across our network so we can keep clean, clear, great-tasting tap water flowing to your home. They also help you see how much water you're using, so together we can protect this precious resource for future generations.

By 2035, all water meters in the UK will be smart, with water companies rolling them out over the coming years.

When will smart meters be fitted in my area?

The map below shows when we’ll start work in each area across Essex and Suffolk to fit and replace meters. This is a 10-year replacement programme, and we’re prioritising the oldest meters first. We’ll contact you directly when it’s time for your upgrade.

What’s the difference between old and new smart meters?

Water meters have changed a lot over the years. Our new smart meters measure your water use and automatically send readings through a secure network.

Once your smart meter is connected to the network, you can track your daily, weekly, and monthly usage in our app and online account. It gives you a clearer understanding of how much water you’re using.

Having a smart meter also means your bills are more accurate. They can also help spot leaks early before they cause damage or impact your bills.

How do smart meters connect and send readings?

Our smart meters use a special type of network called LoRaWAN to send your readings automatically. This network doesn’t use your home Wi-Fi or electricity.

The network is set up and looked after by a third party, who installs and maintains the technology that keeps your meter connected.

FAQs

All newly fitted water meters are smart-enabled.

This means they’ll automatically connect to the network once it’s available in your area.

Our smart meter programme is being rolled out over 10 years, so it may take some time before every meter is connected. You don’t need to do anything, we’ll contact you as soon as your meter connects to the network.

Our network partner is working hard to roll out the LoRaWAN network.

In most cases, this will happen at the same time as, or shortly after, we fit smart meters in your area.

Because of this, your meter may not connect to the network straight away, but we’ll let you know as soon as your water usage is available to view in the app and online.

Yes. Public Health England has confirmed that smart meters do not pose a risk to health.
